P1i… nice (*Read More in T3 Oct!)

Monday, September 24th, 2007

When the Sony Ericsson P1i was announced several months back, I was kind of afraid it would not be on sale in time for my wife’s birthday. Thankfully, it did. While taking some photos of my wife’s M600i for ebay, I couldn’t resist taking some shots of the P1i.

Although, the P1i doesn’t quite seem congruent with the usual P-series input style, I have to admit that it’s still a very well-designed mobile, with detailed articulations that would otherwise give its owner, immense pleasure to use.

Things I like: the blend of metal and plastic, with a balance of weighed-style; its rubberized material, that covers its back (like the T68), although it is more prone to wear over time; and of course, the LED lights and its port connector, more of a subtle way to notify its user of events.

Imagine this phone at your desk, with its port connector facing you…gorgeous. You’ll never miss a call or message. Beautiful, glossy black plastic-lining running down the sides of the phone, where only its mode buttons and camera are visible to the naked eye. With speakers hidden behind a metal strip, aesthetically, I’ll give it 2-thumbs up. Hm…although, I didn’t quite like the loud camera lens and the lack of cover, but still, I reckon it does make photo-taking quicker, than say the P990i.

Congrats are in store for Mahmod Anis, who gave the correct answer to our Simpsons collectables question – it’s Lisa Simpson who’s missing… and he wins a gaming mouse.. ok, it’s a Chimei Jaguar 1600dpi gaming mouse.

Back to work

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

If anybody was wondering where I went for a week, well, it wasn’t for any overseas press junket, but rather some lovely Reservist in-camp training, where I was sunburnt and rained on in the same day! I really hate it when rainwater soaks through your uniform and you end up with wet socks and water in your boots… :P

Now back to work – and unfortunately, due to my ICT, my one week of ‘lull’ time in between magazine publishing is gone. FYI, we work for three weeks straight to get each issue out, with a week in-between for admin work and planning. So it’s kinda tough at the moment, as I’m pretty tired from the field training at ICT, and am going straight into production while trying to get my admin stuff out…

So what are we up to this week? Well….

Tuesday:

Invited to the Mercedes C-Class Challenge. Mercedes is running a driving clinic for two weeks at the Old Police Academy Parade ground, and on Tuesday, it was the turn of motoring journalists (and one semi-motoring, tech-head) to try out the course and experience “Agility at Your Command”.

Professional driving instructors were brought in from Australia for the event, and they have plenty of track experience – apparently many of them have raced in the various Australian motorsport categories, including Australian Supercars and Formula 3

What’s with Aussies and boardshorts?

The instruction phase covered ABS braking (Stomp hard on pedal and keep your foot down), Dynamic Stability Control and the new Dynamic Handling Package with active suspension dampening. Once that was over, there was a timed course, with the fastest driver getting a prize.

Apart from getting distracted by the bright green Micheal Schumacher signature shoes that Robin from ESPNSTAR was wearing, I didn’t do too bad – ok, I killed one cone on my fastest lap and came in middle-of-the-pack. But heck, how many times does someone hands you the keys to a 200K supercharged car and tell you to floor it???

Anyway, the whole idea is to understand how a car handles under emergency conditions, like when an elk crosses the road in front of you ;) but smooth driving is also essential to get a fast lap, and unfortunately, most of us journos there were a bit too used to ABC (Ah Beng Chia) driving… hoot arh?

Here’s some shots – not of me….

Note the wheel smoke in the second image…

And http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6745638443748403567 here’s a hot lap from a lady over at Carma magazine.

Oh… Thursday… it’s going to be a rough day for me:

0845 – Get to Suntech Convention Centre for the start of Games Convention Asia

1145 – Nokia GCA event

1330 – Lunch and interview with Keith Liu of Nokia on new nGage platform

1400 – Sharp Aquos launch

1430 – Samsung MP3 launch

1600 – Microsoft Xbox event

1900 – BMW X5 launch

Gaaahhh… that’s more than 12 hours straight…

My Dear N73, adieu…

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

Alright. Just to keep this short.

My N73, the one mobile I really liked ‘cos of its symbian OS, has officially passed away at 6.22pm, Singaporean time.

It needed a firmware update, where being as busy as we get on normal non-peak magazine days, I did it DIY-style (of course watching to make sure the cable didn’t get disrupted) and connected the updater with the data cable and waited. And waited. And waited.

After its screen flashed a “please remove charger and cable, and replace battery within the phone before continuing with the update….”, numbed, I did just that. Mind you, it was about a good 45- 1hr after. Where if I knew it would die, I would just leave the N73 corded to my PC, until an expert could be engaged. In any case it died. And for the matter, it hurts. Ow~

Tomorrow, it’s time to head for the Nokia Service Centre in an attempt to juice up the phone once again. If not, I’m getting my coveted N95 (8GB) mobile which is, for a lack of better words, drool-icious.

Mio TV – the evolution for movie-holics?!

Monday, September 3rd, 2007

Alright.

We think, maybe, just maybe Mio TV might have an edge on this one, where its latest event has even the most skeptical of us tech-reviewers (you know who you are), unconsciously nod along to the rhythm of the HD-craze.

Introducing the newest cable TV network that says, hey! HEY! Look at us.

Apparently, we just need to spend $15 bucks on our total bill, and a recording device would be thrown in to sweeten the deal, at an additional $10. Pay-as-you-view, or pay-per-channel…the choice is yours.

If you’re afraid the maid’s (aunty, as we favorably like to call our domestic friends) slacking on the job, or your kids are up to no good, there’s a parental lock control.

They’ve got a catchy advertisement going on, and being techie-suckers, we thought that having our own Mandarin, Cantonese and Hokkien channels would prove fun.

Although…We’ve a few grips that might need some ironing-out, before we dive into this little cable deal.

There’s a cap on the amount of information you can download, which is limited at 80GB. Now now, being information-hoarders, and with obvious TERA-bytes becoming the norm size of our HDD capacities (PCs that stack 2 500GB HDDs)… maybe an unlimited recording function would be more attractive in the LR? Also, interruptions from firmware updates (online or via disk?); as well as and time-limits on videos, where what if we lazy people decide we just wanted to watch 15 mins and return a week later?

Say, encrypted DVDs or backup online servers for re-runs that make us tear from our eye ducts, not from our wallets. For further info, check Singtel’s Mio Website.
